Discovery 2 LS Swap Kit is Coming

Upgrade your Disco's power and reliability
Available in November-December 2025

What is the Discovery 2 LS Swap Kit?

Our kit allows you to install a GM/Chevy LS-based engine in your Land Rover Discovery 2. It retains the factory transmission, and all factory functions.

LS engines are notorious for being reliable, powerful, affordable, and widely available.
It is the solution to all the Discovery's engine problems.

Precision Made Parts

Our transmission adapter, engine mounts, and accessory mounts are precision engineered to tight tolerances. Thoughtfully designed to perfectly fit the Discovery's engine bay. Made in USA

Everything Just Works

All factory functions are retained, thanks to our electronic signal interface. That's right: traction control and all the gauges work like they should. We make the wiring as straighforward as possible.

Step-By-Step Instructions

With a step-by-step video and instructions, everything is explained in detail. We don't gatekeep or assume you already know. Just Follow The Golden Path™ to success!

FAQ's

We are aiming for the ~$3500 price point. That includes the transmission adapter, flexplate, starter, engine mounts, signal converter, accessory mounts, serpentine belt, and a few other details.

You will have to purchase your own engine and accessories, as well as some specific aftermarket parts (exhaust manifold, oil pan, Intake tubing, hoses and fittings). These parts will be called out in our instructions.

In the near future, we will have more detailed cost estimation spreadsheets.

We are targeting late November/early December for beta testers. Sign up to be notified when we have an exact date.

I know many of you want to get your Disco back on the road and we feel your pain!

Yes! Our first batch will be for beta testers only. Sign up above to be notified when we are open for beta testing.

Our beta testing run could be rough around the edges. There may be some unforeseen issues, and the instructions will be vague and lack good photography.

Ideal candidates for beta testing are:

  • Ready to swap their engine now
  • Mechanically savvy
  • Ok with minor fabrication and troubleshooting
  • Willing to collaborate with us and report issues, provide feedback.
  • Willing to "follow the golden path" and sticking to our recommended engine and parts.

We will provide extra 1:1 support for beta testers to fix issues and refine our instructions. Also, we will be starting a new YouTube series doing a swap from start to finish, so you can follow along as we release those videos.

This kit is compatible with 4.8L or 5.3L Gen3 LS-based Vortec truck engines. (LM7, LM4, L33, L59, LR4).

These engines are found in vehicles such as the Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, Express, Avalanche, GMC Sierra, Yukon, Envoy XL etc. From 1999 to 2007 (depending on model).

The 6.0L and larger engines are not recommended. Our kit retains the factory ZF 4HP transmission, and these large engines have too much torque for the transmission to handle.

Gen4 LS engines should bolt up, but they have not been tested. If you are interested in trying a Gen4 engine, contact us first. We would be happy to support you, because we want to support the Gen 4 engines officially! But know that you are entering somewhat uncharted territory and you may have to figure out some of your own solutions.

Our kit retains the original ZF 4HP transmission your rover came with. It makes the swap very straightforward, and keeps all factory functions operational.

Our accessory mounts allow you to use a GM alternator, GM Type II powersteering, and the original Rover AC compressor.

This means you can get a nice upgrade in alternator and power steering, but you don't have to mess with AC lines at all.

Yes! All the parts from the complete kit will also be available for sale individually (in logical/coherent bundles). If there is a part you want that is not individually sold on the website, you can contact us to order it.

Yes! If you already have an engine swap using the ACE kit, or with a GM transmission, some of our parts will be useful to you.

Our accessory mounts allow you to use a GM alternator, GM Type II powersteering, and the original Rover AC compressor. They will work with any LS swap, as long as it is a truck engine (-3 pulley offset).

Our signal conversion board is useful for those with the ACE kit, because it eliminates the rover crankshaft position sensor and reluctor wheel. For swaps using a GM transmission, it can help keep the Rover ECU "alive and happy" so that traction control and tachometer still works.

We are happy to help with emissions related questions, however it is your responsibility to research the emissions requirements in your area before purchasing a kit.

This kit retains the original factory rover transmission. In most states, this isn't a problem. But in California this could be a dealbreaker (for OBD II vehicles 1996+).

To learn about California emissions requirements, read the official guidelines here (starting at page 50)

According to the guidelines, for OBD II vehicles:
All emission system configurations must be in the original emission control system configuration as the donor vehicle, including, but not limited to, the transmission, evaporative system, exhaust, and intake

Because our kit retains the original rover transmission, we are concerned that it would be impossible to pass emissions in California and other strict states. Unless your vehicle is pre-1996 (OBD I), like some Discovery 1, or RRC.

For most other states, where the donor's transmission is not required as part of the swap, the following guidelines usually apply:

  • The new engine donor needs to be of the same year or newer as the vehicle it is going in.
  • All emissions equipment from the donor vehicle must be retained (egr if equipped, evap, O2 sensors, catalytic converters...)
  • No emissions or engine related OBD codes, no check engine light, and must be running a stock tune.

It's a good idea to document everything and take note of the donor vehicle VIN.

If you are interested in going through this process with our kit, please contact us first. We would like to help guide you and learn from your experience!

In theory, our kit should work in these vehicles too. However, it has not been tested. We are not sure if the engine mounts will be the same. There could be electrical differences.

If you want to try our kit with these vehicles, contact us first. We would be happy to support you. We want to learn too, so we can officially support these vehicles! Just know that you are entering uncharted territory, and you may end up needing some custom fabrication.

Yes, we are aware of the most common Land Rover engine swaps (BMW M57, Cummins r2.8, Ford Ecoboost, and more). At this time we are focused on LS-based engines only.
